Monitoring Activities
KBRT conducted extensive hydrologic monitoring in the Wood River Valley from 2002-2006 in order to establish baseline hydrologic data of the area.
In 2006 the NRCS chose the Wood River Valley as a "Special Emphasis Watershed" in the Conservation Effects Assessment Program (CEAP). CEAP conducts 3 year monitoring efforts to determine if NRCS programs are having positive,or negative impacts. The Wood River Valley was selected because of the high humber of NRCS programs in which ranchers are involved. From 2006-2008 NRCS researchers looked at the effects of dryland operations, prescribed grazing, and riparian protection on forage production, and analyzed Wood River Valley animal health, ranch economics, riparian conditions, water quality, and fisheries.
Data collection included:
-
stream flows
-
water quality
-
groundwater levels
-
soil moisture
-
forage growth
-
forage protein content
-
cattle fecal analysis
-
forage composition
-
forage cover
-
economic impacts
