Fish Passage in the Sevenmile Creek System
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has identified several structures in the Sevenmile Creek system that are barriers to fish passage. In 2006, KBRT and its partners set out to fix two of these barriers.
A culvert on Short Creek blocked fish from a mile of prime spawning habitat. With support from Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and the Oregon Restoration and Enhancement Board, KBRT and the landowner removed the culvert and it them with a bridge which allows full access to the historic spawning grounds. In addition, the landowner implemented extensive habitat improvements on Short Creek and installed fencing to protect both Short Creek and Sevenmile Creek from cattle activity.
A diversion dam on Sevenmile Creek was previously fitted with a fish ladder which no longer functions. With support from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Oregon Restoration and Enhancement Board, KBRT and the landowner worked with an engineer to develop a design that will allow all fish of concern to pass around the dam, while providing uninterrupted irrigation water.
